Register for Scale By the Bay to attend the 2021 edition online, October 28–29, covering EU and US timezones!

SBTB 2021 is proud to host Facebook cloud infra team for the first time. A home to such By the Bay regulars as Marius Eriksen (née Twitter/Finagle) and Ben Christensen (née Netflix/RxJava), it solves the scalability challenges at atruly global scale, given the billions of users FB has. Ariel Rao will speak about the setup.

Uber’s Mohit Jaggi shows how to scale by moving from Python and SQL to Scala, and presto to Spark. This is a practical demonstration how types work at scale.

David Aronchik of Microsoft returns to present the SAME project for reproducible machine learning, and Adi Polak shows a scalable ML view with Spark. Weights and Biases founder Lukas Biewald gives his own view and buildup for reproducible Machine Learning — it’s an emerging theme this year! It’s also enabled by tools like DVC, and we dig right into it with Milecia McGregor, learning how to tune hyperparameters with DVC experiments.

Databases are everywhere — and SQL is kind again. As MariaDB Director of DevRel Rob Hedgepeth says, don’t call it a comeback! We also see how Databricks reinvented a relational database with dataframes and datalakes, and using neo4j, the OG graph database, as a platform for Java applications.

Apple is presenting its core technology, Swift, as a distributed systems platform for the first time By the Bay. And we have distributed tracing talk with Swift to complement it!
